PostHeaderIcon What are the exercises for entrance exam in Interior Design?

I want to study interior design as a BA, but most art and design institutes ask the candidates to do those practical exercises as part of their entrance exam.

1. What are you suppose to do in them?
2. Do I need to be very skilled in sketching or is a simple training good enough?

Many thanks in advance!

In addition to what the first person said, you may want to practice doing some journal entries where you observe your surroundings and write what you see. While my school did not require a portfolio or entrance exam until after the first year in the program (we were cut from 80 students to 40 students after taking a year’s worth of classes), our portfolio required us to have journal entries where we just wrote about design in everyday life. I would imagine that on an exam they may do something like show you a picture of a building or other enttity and ask you to write about the it and the emotions that it evokes. I’m not talking about sappy writing or saying "the building made me happy", but just things like, "they way the two roof lines merged together asymmetrically further emphasized the energy the architect was trying to create, and that was continued by the activity inside". Some type of BS like that. I would basically make sure your ability to draw, your sense of scale, and your writing ability are tops before entering an exam.

PostHeaderIcon Marketing my interior design business to Contractors?

I am an interior designer who would like to specialize in helping contractors design new homes (presold or spec). I currently work for a design center that offers cabinets, carpet, tile, hardood & slab countertops. I feel that I could be a single source for a contractor to go to for design help (since a lot of them don’t want to deal with this end of it). I could also select paint colors, appliances, lighting & plumbing fixtures.
I would love any ideas on how to market contractors!

Good Idea, Erika!

My late mother really broke into that market when she did a "Street of Dreams" home. This is where high end contractors build a number of spec homes and dress them to the hilt. They get more "lookers" and therefore, future contracts. Mom got a great deal of exposure, too and formed a relationship with that builder that lasted a lifetime.

Check with any/all building contractor organizations in the area, or large Realtors or perhaps even Building Supply centers. I believe the one she was involved with, was arranged through a large Realtor, who owned a large plot they were subdividing… The Street of Dreams was at the front and the rest of the lots were "for sale".

PostHeaderIcon What are the best colleges in the country for interior design?

I am a junior in high school and I am interested in pursuing interior design. I live in Santa Monica, so I am down the street from Los Angeles. I am curious as to what the most prestigious colleges are for interior design in the U.S. but I am most interested in the Los Angeles City area. Thanks!

I have been researching this too. I am about to graduate with a degree in something more general, so my options are a little bit limited compared to yours. However, I have found the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), California State University, Northridge (CSUN), Woodbury University, and Santa Monica College. These programs all look like they are worth finding out more information. Right now, I’m leaning toward choosing FIDM, but I’m still unsure.

Please, let me know which program you end up choosing and why. It will really help me in my own search. You can email me.
